چکیده

This paper reports the first investigation of the dependence of AC electro-osmosis (ACEO) on the solution chemistry. It is argued that classical dilute-solution theory breaks down in ACEO, since the large applied voltage leads to ion crowding near the electrode surfaces. A modified theory is proposed with steric effects (finite ion sizes) and a charge-dependent viscoelectric effect, which predicts that ACEO flow depends on the salt concentration, ion sizes and valences. Experiments demonstrate significant variations in ACEO pumping upon varying salt concentration (μM – mM KCl) or ionic species (μM NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2, KI, KOH), which merit further experimental and theoretical study.

Electro-orientation and electrorotation of metal nanowires.

The physical mechanisms responsible for the electrical orientation and electrical rotation of metal nanowires suspended in an electrolyte as a function of frequency of the applied ac electric field are examined theoretically and experimentally. The alignment of a nanowire in an ac field with a fixed direction is called electro-orientation. The induced constant rotation of a nanowire in a rotati...

Fluid flow induced by nonuniform ac electric fields in electrolytes on microelectrodes. II. A linear double-layer analysis

Frequency-dependent fluid flow in electrolytes on microelectrodes subjected to ac voltages has recently been reported. The fluid flow is predominant at frequencies of the order of the relaxation frequency of the electrode-electrolyte system. The mechanism responsible for this motion has been termed ac electro-osmosis: a continuous flow driven by the interaction of the oscillating electric field...

Experimental Study of Electrolyte Dependence of Ac Electroosmotic Pumps

Recent studies indicate increased efficiency of microfluidic ac electro-osmotic pumps by utilizing broken symmetries with raised steps on the electrodes. An experimental study on the dependence of ac electroosmosis in microchannels on solution chemistry for the new fast aceo stepped pumps is reported. Micro PIV was used to determine peak velocities for M mM ! " concentrations of KCl, NaCl, CaCl...

Pumping of liquids with ac voltages applied to asymmetric pairs of microelectrodes.

The net flow of electrolyte induced by an ac electric potential applied to an array of asymmetric pairs of microelectrodes has recently been reported. The interaction between the oscillating electric field and the oscillating induced charge at the diffuse double layer on the electrodes results in a steady electro-osmotic velocity distribution on top of the electrodes. This slip velocity distrib...

Electro-orientation of a metal nanowire counterbalanced by thermal torques.

The rotational diffusion of electrically polarized metal nanowires suspended in an electrolyte is studied. The alignment of a Brownian nanowire in an ac field with a given direction is not complete due to thermal (fluctuating) torques. The orientation distribution allows us to examine the electrokinetic torques acting on the nanowire for smaller voltages than in previous deterministic experimen...
